During the last six years a number of schools have tried to run after school childcare clubs following strong initial interest from parents. Once opened however, the clubs have really struggled to attract enough numbers to be viable. Some of the reasons given are that parents rely on friends and relatives or share childcare with friends or want their child to be in a home rather than a club environment. This pattern is reflected throughout the country in rural areas with clubs being set up and then closing because numbers of children requiring places is not sufficient to make the clubs viable.
For many working parents we know that care is essential between the end of the school day and the time they can get home from work. In order to develop a sustainable way of fulfilling expectations, we have been working with the local registered childminders and Childminding Matters, a charity dedicated to supporting and developing childminders. Our aim is to ensure that any parent who needs somewhere for their child to be looked after has the offer of a place with a childminder in the Aylsham Cluster area.
All of the schools in the Cluster are working very closely with the Aylsham Cluster Children's Centre. Part of this work is to provide further support for Childminders.
